Market and Economic Overview – A look in the rear-view mirror
The Plimsoll team is supported by a Global Investment Committee composed of highly experienced professionals including former CEO’s and Presidents of major investment firms.  Each member has considerable investment experience as CEO, President, Chairman, or Chief Investment Officer of a respected investment management organization.

The Investment Committee’s role is to provide a global view with regard to asset allocation and to assist with high quality investment manager selection, ongoing manager research and due diligence.

Thomas C. Barry, CFA (New York)

Mr. Barry is the CEO and Founder of Zephyr Management. Prior to founding Zephyr, he was President and CEO of Rockefeller & Co., the investment management arm of the Rockefeller family, from 1983 to 1993. Previously, Mr. Barry was employed by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. from 1969 to 1982. Among other responsibilities, he was President of T. Rowe Price New Horizons Funds, Inc., then the largest mutual fund specializing in small capitalization companies. Mr. Barry received an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1969 and an undergraduate degree from Yale University in 1966 where he majored in Latin American Studies. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

D. William J. Garrett (London)


Mr. Garrett is the senior officer in Zephyr Management’s London office. He serves as the Chairman of the Zephyr Peacock Funds and the Zephyr Aurora Fund and is a member of the PAIP–PCAP investment committee. Mr. Garrett is the former Group Chief Executive Officer of Robert Fleming Holdings Ltd. Mr. Garrett joined Robert Fleming as an investment analyst in 1970, and held several positions in divisions of the company before his appointment as its Chief Executive Officer in April 1997.

Mr. Garrett is a partner of Zephyr Management, L.P. and a director of Zephyr Management, Inc. and Zephyr Management U.K. Ltd. Mr. Garrett has a degree in law from Cambridge University and experience in fund management, investment research and securities businesses.

William O. Hall, III, CFA, CPA, CFP (Maine)

William O. Hall, III is President, Managing Director and Senior Investment Counselor of Plimsoll.  Mr. Hall is the former CEO and President of W.P. Stewart Asset Management, N.A. and Executive Officer of W.P. Stewart & Co., Ltd. Mr. Hall has over 25 years of experience in the investment and wealth management business.  Prior to joining W.P. Stewart, Mr. Hall was Managing Director of H.M. Payson & Co., a private trust company in Portland, Maine  He was also a founder and managing principal of Hazzard & Hall, CPA’s, PA.  Mr. Hall holds a Bachelor degree from the University of Richmond and a Masters in Finance from Bentley College and is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner.  Mr. Hall serves as Chairman of Maine Education Services.

Stephen E. Canter (New York)

Mr. Stephen E. Canter is the Chief Operating Officer of Zephyr Management. He has over 35 years of experience as a senior executive in investment management having served as a Chairman and CEO of Dreyfus Corporation and as a Vice Chairman of Mellon Financial Corporation. Earlier in his career he served as CEO of Kleinwort Benson Investment Management Americas, Mitchell Hutchins Institutional Investments and Chase Investors Management Corp. Mr. Canter earned an AB from Cornell University and MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business.

Steve Bates, CFA (London)

Mr. Bates is the Chief Investment Officer of two Zephyr marketable securities funds. Prior to joining Zephyr in June 2002, Mr. Bates was responsible for JP Morgan Fleming Asset Management’s emerging market activities, which he established for the predecessor organization, Robert Fleming Co., Ltd., in 1990. He has extensive experience in emerging countries across the world, both as an investor and as a business developer, and was one of the pioneers of investment in Eastern Europe, including Russia. He received a Law degree from Cambridge University, and he is also a holder of the CFA charter.

Bruce Lueck, CFA (New York)

Mr. Lueck is a Managing Director at Zephyr Management. Prior to joining Zephyr, Mr. Lueck was the President and Chief Investment Officer of Okabena Investment Services where he directed asset allocation, internal portfolio management and global manager selection. Mr. Lueck was previously President of IDS Advisory, a subsidiary of IDS/American Express. Mr. Lueck has extensive equity portfolio management experience, beginning with IDS Stock Fund, then one of the mutual fund industry’s largest equity funds, and continuing through IDS Advisory and Okabena Company. Mr. Lueck holds both a BS in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from Stanford University and is a CFA charterholder.

Jim Awad (New York)

Jim Awad is a Managing Director at Zephyr Management. Previously, Mr. Awad served as the Chairman of WP Stewart, Awad Asset Management, and BMI Capital. Jim Awad is a graduate of Harvard Business School and graduated Cum laude from Washington & Lee University. He currently serves on the board of One East Avenue, is on the Investment Committee of Brick Church, and is a member of the Economics Club of New York.

Donald R. Kurtz (New York)

Member New York Community Trust Investment Committee. Over 40 years of investment experience in North American and Global Equities. Former Managing Director of General Motors Investment Management Corporation. Former Executive Vice President of Equitable Life Assurance Society and former CEO and Chairman of Equitable Investment Management Company. Former outside director of PIMCO Advisors. Former Chair of Bowdoin College Investment Committee and Chair Emeritus of the Bowdoin College Board of Trustees. BA, Economics, Bowdoin College; MBA, Columbia University. Holds an Honorary Degree from Bowdoin College.
